Our 2016 Michael Miller is an exceptional Rhone blend that displays complex and robust aromas of smoked meats, dried plums, dark cherries and a hint of white and black pepper. The palate is rich with silky tannins with intriguing secondary flavors of cherry cola, anise, and dark raspberry that lingers on the palate through a long, lush, elegant finish.
100% estate grown
Each element of our 2016 Michael Miller blend comes from our Estate Vineyard from blocks we have designated as Reserve tier blocks. We farm each of these blocks differently to ensure a small crop size that will allow the fruits growth to focus on concentrating flavors and optimal ripeness. Each varietal was then hand harvested together where we co-fermented all three-grape varietals together. About 25% of the grape clusters were left whole whereas the remaining grapes were de-stemmed. A variety of small fermenters were used, including large format barrels. Our extraction was fairly aggressive at the beginning of fermentation with 3-4 punchdowns per day. As the fermentation progressed, a gentler approach was taken to prevent over-extraction. The wine fermented on the skins about 18 days. Barrel aged in 100% new French oak, large format 500L barrels for 20 months.
This wine pays tribute to our father, Michael L. Miller, who founded Airfield Estates Winery and also was responsible for expanding our estate vineyard into the large-scale operation it is today. The pride, passion, and enthusiasm that he expressed for our vineyard, grapes, and wine is something that we hope to continue to share with others.
