2017 Founders Donald
This elegant Chardonnay offers intriguing layers of poached pears, white peaches and baked apples interwoven with nuances of wet stone, marzipan and roasted cashews. The mouthfeel is pure and balanced, offering vibrant acidity while preserving a
luxurious richness, finishing with notes of sweet exotic spices.
100% estate grown
The wine showcases the best Chardonnay our estate vineyard has to offer. These reserve blocks have been cropped to small yields to allow depth and concentrated flavors. Harvested at optimal maturity, the grapes were handpicked and sent directly to the press as whole clusters for a very gentle pressing, after pressing the juice was cold settled for 48 hours, then sent directly to very exclusive French oak barrels. Fermented and aged in a mixture of 500L puncheons and 225L barrels with 80% being new French oak and 20% 2-year-old French oak. Certain barrels were inoculated with a special yeast strain, and 2 barrels were fermented with wild or native yeast. Temperatures ranged from 55-64 degrees allowing for a lengthy fermentation of about 4 weeks before alcoholic fermentation was completed. Next, the barrels were inoculated for malolactic fermentation (MLF) and were closely monitored. The goal being able to seize MLF once the richness and malic/tartaric acids were balanced and to avoid the “buttery” characteristic. After MLF was seized, the wines had their lees stirred twice a month to build roundness and richness on the palate for about 4 months before being racked off the wines solids. Aged for 10 months before being stabilized and prepared for bottling. This wine was produced in a vegan manner with no animal byproducts used in the production process.

This wine pays tribute to our grandfather, Donald D. Miller, who founded our estate vineyard. Always believing that the Yakima Valley had the potential to grow some of the best grapes in the world, Don made an expedition to the Napa Valley in 1967 and purchased several varietals to see what would grow best with our climate and soil. The following Spring, Don planted Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Cabernet Sauvignon marking the early beginnings of our estate vineyard.
