2017 Airport Ranch Red Blend
40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Syrah, 23% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot.
Aged for 12 months in 100% French Oak barrels (60% new, 40% 2-3 year old )
This blend is a celebration of our 50th anniversary of growing wine grapes. This harmonious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot displays the best of the red varietals we grow at Airport Ranch Estate Vineyard. Complex aromatics of cassis, marionberry, and sweet pipe tobacco entice the palate as it leads into layers of dried fig, sandalwood and hints of roasted espresso. The finish is silky with notes of sweet barrel spice that lingers on the palate.
100% estate grown
To begin 2017, Eastern Washington was in the midst of a brutal winter that lingered on into early March. Our concerns of winter damage to the vines were alleviated towards the end of April when our vineyards came back to life with bud break. Bud break was a bit behind a normal Washington vintage but not by much. Spring of 2017 was warm, and this led to
rapid growth in the vineyards, our vineyard team was quick to manage excessive growth, so our vines met our winemaking goals. The spring led into a perfect Eastern Washington summer with warm days and cool nights that we are keen on for a great growing season. Veraison happened around the first of August and with all the last-minute adjustments
of crop size we were very pleased about what we would see in 2017. Wildfires were a great deal of concern for us, but as damaging as these fires were, our Estate vineyard was not impacted by the excessive smoke we saw in the state creating a huge sigh of relief from the vineyard and winemaking teams. Very similar to the 2016 vintage, we saw a much cooler
than average September that slowed the ripening process down quite a bit. This allowed the grapes to hang on their vines much longer allowing them to achieve optimal ripeness for flavors and sugar content. This did mean a later season for us as we brought in the last of our grapes in early November. Overall, we are pleased that we were not affected by all the
smoke and are more than pleased with all the extra efforts and arduous work our vineyard team accomplished in making our fruit of exceptional quality which in turn created wonderful wines.
In creating a wine to celebrate 50 years of grape growing, our main goal was to showcase the best varietals Airport Ranch Estate Vineyard produces. All four of the elements that went into this blend were sourced from our reserve tier blocks that have been cropped to low yield levels to produce more concentration and depth from these grapes. Each varietal was hand harvested at optimal maturity and sent in small batches for fermentation. Extractions on each lot varied, some lots had more of an aggressive approach to extract more where others like the Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon had a more gentle approach with more maceration and extended fermentation time. Aged for 12 months in 60% New French Oak and 40% 2-3 year old French oak, the blend is exactly what our goals where for this wine, showcasing dark fruit elements, complexity and a lush finish.
